A world famous orthopaedic oncologist, Dr. Hornicek is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Hornicek’s clinical research interests include heterotopic ossiﬁcation, allograph transplantation, immunotherapy, and outcome research for musculoskeletal tumors. Since the 1980s he has been instrumental in improving quality and safety for Tissue Banking globally. He is a world expert on chordoma who works actively with the Chordoma Foundation, established The Stephan L. Harris Chordoma Center at MGH, and brings this expertise as a focus of his activities at UCLA. Dr. Hornicek’s basic research eﬀorts have focused on speciﬁc aspects of cell biology and more recently, molecular biology of sarcomas. Dr. Hornicek has also focused on the development of new chemotherapeutic drugs isolated from marine organisms for the treatment of sarcomas. This has led to clinical trials and patent applications, and the work has been consistently funded by the NIH, charitable foundations, and industry. Dr. Hornicek has provided mentorship to many clinical trainees and research fellows. Dr. Hornicek graduated with a B.A. in biology and mathematics from Washington and Jeﬀerson College. He earned his PhD in physics‐biophysics from Georgetown University and his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hornicek completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the University of Miami and an Orthopaedic Oncology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston. He began his academic career as a faculty member at the University of Miami following his residency and then was recruited to the Harvard faculty in 1998. As a member of different orthopaedic and orthopaedic oncology Societies, in which I am fully involved with a considerable amount of commitments, I do believe that orthopaedic oncology Societies have a paramount role in education and knowledge update in our field.
EMSOS in Europe and MSTS in the USA and far beyond are very active Societies, which I am honoured to be part of. ISOLS has an intercontinental breath and could/should be a “liaison“ between the mentioned Societies and all the colleagues over the world. Some of the founding members and “fathers“ of our Society are Franklin H. Sim, Mario Campanacci, Rainer Kotz, Ed Chao and many others, well-known pioneers in musculoskeletal oncology. ISOLS has always played a crucial role and nowadays is more and more confirming this in the international scenario.
I have had the pleasure and honour to be President of ISOLS, while currently I am Membership Chair. Besides, I was appointed as organiser of 2013 ISOLS Annual Meeting in Bologna, which was quite successful.

A world famous orthopaedic oncologist, Dr. Hornicek is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Hornicek’s clinical research interests include heterotopic ossiﬁcation, allograph transplantation, immunotherapy, and outcome research for musculoskeletal tumors. Since the 1980s he has been instrumental in improving quality and safety for Tissue Banking globally. He is a world expert on chordoma who works actively with the Chordoma Foundation, established The Stephan L. Harris Chordoma Center at MGH, and brings this expertise as a focus of his activities at UCLA. Dr. Hornicek’s basic research eﬀorts have focused on speciﬁc aspects of cell biology and more recently, molecular biology of sarcomas. Dr. Hornicek has also focused on the development of new chemotherapeutic drugs isolated from marine organisms for the treatment of sarcomas. This has led to clinical trials and patent applications, and the work has been consistently funded by the NIH, charitable foundations, and industry. Dr. Hornicek has provided mentorship to many clinical trainees and research fellows. Dr. Hornicek graduated with a B.A. in biology and mathematics from Washington and Jeﬀerson College. He earned his PhD in physics‐biophysics from Georgetown University and his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. A world famous orthopaedic oncologist, Dr. Hornicek is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Hornicek’s clinical research interests include heterotopic ossiﬁcation, allograph transplantation, immunotherapy, and outcome research for musculoskeletal tumors. Since the 1980s he has been instrumental in improving quality and safety for Tissue Banking globally. He is a world expert on chordoma who works actively with the Chordoma Foundation, established The Stephan L. Harris Chordoma Center at MGH, and brings this expertise as a focus of his activities at UCLA. Dr. Hornicek’s basic research eﬀorts have focused on speciﬁc aspects of cell biology and more recently, molecular biology of sarcomas. Dr. Hornicek has also focused on the development of new chemotherapeutic drugs isolated from marine organisms for the treatment of sarcomas. This has led to clinical trials and patent applications, and the work has been consistently funded by the NIH, charitable foundations, and industry. Dr. Hornicek has provided mentorship to many clinical trainees and research fellows. Dr. Hornicek graduated with a B.A. in biology and mathematics from Washington and Jeﬀerson College. He earned his PhD in physics‐biophysics from Georgetown University and his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hornicek completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the University of Miami and an Orthopaedic Oncology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston. He began his academic career as a faculty member at the University of Miami following his residency and then was recruited to the Harvard faculty in 1998.
